In recent years, Kenya has seen an increase in religious violence and terrorism. Al-Shabaab has launched numerous attacks from its base of operation in Somalia, crossing into Kenya and attacking churches and Christian communities, and then retreating back to Somalia.
Beginning in the late 1990s, Indonesia erupted into a hotbed of Islamic Jihad. Splinter military units and Islamic militias traveled across islands attacking predominately Christian communities. In some cases, these groups slaughtered entire communities of hundreds of Christians.
